AFC Cup 2013 Preview - Selangor vs Tampin Rovers

Selangor will want to take advantage of their stellar performance after trouncing star-studded Darul Takzim last Saturday, when entertaining 2012 S.League champions Tampines Rovers this Wednesday, in their second AFC Cup match. Although their overall performance this season has been a bit of a yo-yo, Selangor has performed well at home, and this home advantage will definitely add to the obstacles that must be overcome by the Stags.
Their coach Irfan Bakti will want to retain most of the players who featured in their spectacular Saturday win, except for the inclusion of their AFC-only import Michel Kubala. However, Ramez Dayoub’s exclusion from the squad due to his match-fixing charges might just come back to haunt Selangor in this match, and on the Asian front.

The Stags have been solid so far this season, being beaten only once, in their previous AFC match against Vienamese side Sai Gon Xuan Tanh. They will do well to rely on their evergreen striker Aleksander Duric, who consistently performs well against Malaysian teams. Their coach Nenad Bacina will most probably rely on the same starting XI as the previous week and can call upon the services of super-sub Jamil Ali should things not go their way, especially mid-way through the second half. However, the inclusion of left-back Shaiful Esah is still doubtful, as he is still nursing a knock he picked up in last week’s match.

This match is also important to these two teams who now occupy the bottom two spots of Group H, if they want to keep up with the leaders, and to advance to the next round in the competition. It is probably apt to say that the winner of this match will live on to fight another day, while the loser will fail to qualify to the next round. Expect a cagey fight to the finish between these two teams from two countries who are never too amiable when it comes to football.

DID YOU KNOW?

Selangor only qualified for this year’s AFC Cup competition because Kelantan, the 2012 Malaysian Super League champions had already qualified for the same competition by also winning the FA Cup.

This is Selangor’s first foray into Asian competitions since they exited their last campaign in 2010 at the group stage.

In the 2012 edition, Tampines were placed in the same group with another Malaysian outfit, Terengganu.

The last time Selangor met a Singaporean team in an Asian competition was in the 2006 AFC Cup. That team was Tampines Rovers.

AFC Cup 2013 Preview Ayeyawady Utd vs Kelantan

Both teams, Kelantan and Ayeyawady United, have been struggling in their respective leagues so far recording only one win each in their last six matches. During the opening match last week, the Burmese lost to Vietnam’s Da Nang 2-1 while Kelantan dropped points in the draw against Maldivian outfit Maziya SC in.

The home side will have the advantage of playing on their home ground, Thuwanna YTC Stadium. This match will be the key for them to go through into the knock out stages after they were kicked out of last year’s tournament by the Red Warriors. The manager, Marjan Sekulovski, who lashed out at his side for a poor display in their last outing against Da Nang would be on hand to rally his troops.

Nanda Lin Kyaw Chit and Nay Lin Tun are key players for Ayeyawady and together with their Brazillian striker, Leandro Duarte, who will create chances from nothing, the Burmese outfit look to hassle Kelantan’s defence. This team will be banking on the set pieces to break the Red Warriors.

The visiting Kelantan, on the other hand, will go into this match to rekindle their lost in form as of late.

The draw against Maziya last week put Bojan Hodak’s men in the red zone and it does not seem like he is taking this tie lightly. The Croatian is lining up his best players, such as Badhri Radzi and Norfarhan Mohamad. The former, especially, had shown how important he is to the team when he stole a late goal against Maziya a few minutes after coming on as a substitute.

The Red Warriors are known for their strong midfield marshaled by Badhri and Shakir. Together with the duo of Dimitry Petratos and Dickson Nwakaeme upfront, Kelantan are all set to break the Ayeyawady defence.

It will be anybody’s match on Wednesday. The battle will be fought in the middle of the park between Badhri, the new star for the Malayan Tigers and the Myammar Under-22 midfielder, Nanda Lin Kyaw Chit.

Liga Perdana FAS 2013 - Grasshopper FC vs Sri Remaja

GRASSHOPPER FC vs SRI REMAJA

Tarikh: 10 Mac 2013 (Ahad)
Padang: Stadium Kuala Selangor
Masa: 445petang

Grasshopper meneruskan perjuangan dalam Liga Perdana FAS 2013 pada perlawanan ketiga mereka menentang sebuah lagi skuad yang dibarisi pemain-pemain muda remaja yang pantas, sama seperti perlawanan kedua mereka menentang SIFA tempoh hari.

Permulaan perlawanan bagai menbayangkan corak permainan agak keras apabila bek tengah GFC, Tompoq dilayangkan kad kuning seawal minit kedua kerana satu clearance lewat yang terkena kuat kaki pemain Sri Remaja.

Perlawanan berakhir 1 Sri Remaja tanpa balas.

AFC CUP 2013 - KELANTAN VS MAZIYA (MALDIVE)

Kelantan looked eager to start the match on the right foot as they pressured Maziya’s defence early on. Both Shakir Shaari and Dimitri Petratos didn’t wait long to test Maziya’s goalkeeper, Imran Mohamed, but their shots were safely parried away.

Maziya on the other hand did trigger several counter attacks via their captain, Ahmed Rasheed. Moments later, Abdulla Asadhulla shocked the Red Warriors defence when he struck a long shot catching Khairul Fahmi off guard. But the shot went high and wide.

Havoc occured in Maziya’s penalty box when Dickson's quick foot managed to create the chance for Petratos to strike, but his shot was well blocked by the defence, before Zairo's follow up went well wide.

The second half started in the same manner as the first period without any substitutions from both teams. Kelantan dominated most of the possession compared to Maziya who spent most of the time defending in their own half.

On the 62nd minute, Shakir‘s mistake stunned the home crowd as Hassan Adhuham capitalised with an easy finish. Ismail Easa beautifully lobbed the ball over the Kelantan defence opening a chance for Hassan to tap the ball in past Khairul Fahmi.

Shocked by the goal, Kelantan made two quicks subtitutions introducing their captain, Badhri Radzi and Indra Putra Mahyuddin to strenghthen their attack. Badhri didn’t wait long to mark his presence when he instantenously created a chance for Faiz Subri to strike, but it was well-saved by Imran.

Piya turned hero for the home crowd when he struck a beautiful shot for Kelantan to level the score. A through ball by Petratos was quickly snapped by Badhri to shoot past the impressive Imran.

Dickson Nwakaeme had his chance to score when he headed Badhri’s cross but was yet again denied by the quick reactions of the goalkeeper.

Towards the end of the match, Haris Safwan almost sent the crowd wild but his weak follow-up shot meant that Kelantan had to be contented with a draw.

It was a suprising result for many as minnows Maziya managed to hold the Malaysian champions to a draw. A late substition by Bojan to introduce Badhri Radzi did affect the home team's gameplay but it was too late for them to grab a much needed home win.
