AFC Cup : Kelantan VS Navibank

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian Super League champions Kelantan and Vietnam National Cup holders Navibank Saigon played out a dour goalless draw in their opening Group H match at the Bukit Jalil Stadium on Wednesday.

Both teams struggled to create opportunities in a disappointing match played in heavy rain in the Malaysian capital. As a result, all four teams in the group now have a point each after the earlier encounter between Yangon United of Myanmar and Chonburi of Thailand ended in a 1-1 draw.

Kelantan, who have started their season well and lead the way once again in the Malaysian Super League, were expected to be too strong for their visitors, who are struggling near the foot of the Vietnamese Super League.

However, the Red Warriors struggled in the poor conditions on what was their debut in the AFC Cup and they were unable to impose their usual slick passing game on the visitors.

Navibank could have taken the lead in the eighth minute when Dang Khanh Lam created a good opportunity for himself only to be denied by goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi

Kelantan's best opportunity fell to Mohamad Ghaddar, who was found unmarked in the Navibank box in the 26th minute but the Lebanese striker only succeeded in sending his fierce effort wide.

The slow tempo of the match meant few openings for both sides but Kelantan could have snatched the win in the closing minutes when Ghaddar was presented with another opportunity but rushed his attempt which was easily stopped by Navibank goalkeeper Santos.
